14: Dred Scott, Wong Kim Ark & Vanessa Lopez explores the recurring question about who has the right to be an American citizen. 14 examines the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment and present-day attacks upon it through compelling personal stories and expertly-told history. Under the Fourteenth Amendment, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
This right to citizenship, extended to all regardless of parentage, was originally passed to confer citizenship to freed slaves. It is a Constitutional right that has endured attacks since its passage and continues to be at risk today. 14 illuminates the struggles and victories of people who fought against slavery, Chinese Exclusion, and anti-immigrant laws in this country. The story is told through the lives of three ordinary and extraordinary American families who changed history by their courageous challenges to the powerful status quo: Dred and Harriet Scott, Wong Kim Ark, and Rosario and Vanessa Lopez. Descendants of Dred and Harriet Scott and those of Wong Kim Ark tell the stories of how their ancestors fought all the way to the Supreme Court and changed American history.

Joaquin Lopez - biography
Joaquin Lopez is a musician, writer, cultural events and music producer, a storyteller and a small business owner. Event credits include producer for Taste of Mexico at the Portland Art Museum, Spanish language producer for Filmuzik, and creator of the annual cultural performance for Portland Latino Gay Pride: Voz Alta—an evening of music and poetry that celebrates the Latino American experience through poetic narratives that feature the lives of Portland’s Latino community, performed by actors and orchestrated live with Latin American folk songs. In 2014, he inaugurated Cinescopio, a film series that presents classic Latin American cinema at the Hollywood Theatre. As a member of Los Porteños—Portland’s Latino writers group—he was co-producer for Words That Burn: A Dramatization of World War II Experiences of William Stafford, Lawson Inada, and Guy Gabaldon in Their Own Words written by Cindy William Gutierrez at Milagro for the William Stafford Centennial. In December 2012, he released the album, …for the Disenchanted, a Spanish language ode to melancholia and longing featuring original modern day boleros. Acting credits include Milagro Theatre, Sowelu Theater, Oregon Children’s Theatre, and The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Joaquin received his B.F.A. in Theatre Arts from Southern Oregon University and serves on the board The Hollywood Theatre, Sowelu Theatre and Portland Latino Gay Pride. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Bridge Award from Business for Culture and the Arts and was the first recipient of the Espiritu Award presented by Milagro Theatre. His bread and butter is creating after school programming for at risk Latino youth at Latino Network. He is the oldest son of the Lopez family who for fifteen years has run La Bonita Mexican restaurant in Portland, Oregon.

Edna Vazquez - biography
Edna Vazquez is a Portland-based Latin American singer-songwriter who performs original compositions that pay homage to her international influences with a passion that comes through in every note of her music. She lifts the audience’s spirits during her cathartic live performances with a vocal range that allows her to transition seamlessly between folk, rock, pop and Mariachi, all while exploring jazz stylings. Edna’s songs are deeply rooted in universal human emotion and she has traveled far and wide spreading her message of light, love and cultural healing. Born in the Mexican state of Colima but raised in Jalisco, Edna spent half of her life immersed in the culture and music of Mexico and Latin America, moving to the United States as a teenager. Her passion for music and performance was born from these bicultural roots and has led her on a path of self-discovery through song that has brought her success at each turn in the road. Whether sharing the stage with her musical influences or winning the first prize on Sabado Gigante with her rendition of Cucurrucucú Paloma, Edna’s spirit and powerful vocal performance have been the cornerstone of her career.
